Event description

A curriculum for all, not just some (Online Workshop)

Aotearoa New Zealand's early childhood curriculum Te Whāriki sets out a strong inclusive framework for the practice of early childhood kaiako. Amongst the expectations set out therein is that disabled tamariki, as for all tamariki, have the opportunity of enjoying a meaningful, equitable and inclusive early childhood education that centres their rights, affirms and enhances their mana, and prioritises power sharing relationships with whānau. However, actualising Te Whāriki's inclusive intent can be a struggle for many early childhood kaiako without real-life examples of disability, rights and inclusion to work through and reflect on.

In this workshop, using a variety of examples drawn from research in everyday early childhood settings, we'll go deep with strategies early childhood kaiako might call on to confidently expand and transform their kete of inclusive pedagogies so that disabled tamariki and their whānau are able to actively participate within our early childhood communities, as is their right.
